Job Overview:
Beyond Photonics is looking for an enthusiastic and highly-motivated individual to join our team and contribute to the development of advanced laser-based remote sensing systems.   Though growing, Beyond Photonics is now a small organization, so the position requires the ability and desire to support a wide variety of technical and business development activities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead analysis and design of advanced lasers and laser-based remote sensing systems.
  • Perform prototype assembly, testing, and optimization of lasers, photonics, and lidar systems.
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and optical engineers in the development, assembly, testing, and characterization of optical, mechanical and electronic assemblies.
  • Design and fabricate specialized or modified opto-mechanical, electro-optic, and electrical components.
  • Author and co-author of proposals, reports, papers, and presentations.
  • Support process development and support definition of new processes to develop prototype products, document prototype process development.
  • Setup and operation of laboratory equipment such as optical and electrical test equipment, microscopes, environmental chambers, chillers, etc.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • PhD degree in Physics or Engineering from an accredited university with strong emphasis on lasers or photonics.
  • More than 2 years of relevant experience beyond PhD degree – postdoc or industry.
  • Demonstrated experience through publications or patents in the development of advanced laser-based or photonic systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior mathematical-based analytical and trouble shooting skills.
  • Ability to work well in small Engineering development teams – typically 3-5 team members.
  • Ability to multitask across 2-3 concurrent ongoing development or proposal efforts in the photonics area.
  • Hands on experience in building lasers or laser-based systems.
  • Experience with fiber laser technologies a plus.
  • Skilled in the use of laboratory test and measurement equipment found in typical laser / lidar development labs.
  • Experience in programming development software using, e.g., Python, Matlab, or C++ or LabVIEW
  • Experience using design software packages such as SolidWorks, Comsol, Creo, Zemax, or similar is a plus.
  • Knowledge of fundamental electronics circuits and schematics, and basic electronic components.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and application software.
  • Self-starter, willing learner, eager to gain and share new knowledge, able to work with minimal supervision, and be a team player.

Other Requirements:
US citizenship is required.  Security clearance is a plus.
