Job Overview:
Position works closely with other engineers and scientists in design, build and testing of advanced laser-based instruments. Requires precision hands-on work in the lab assembling, aligning, and analyzing highly delicate electro-optic and electronic components. Though growing, BP is now a small organization, so the position also requires the ability and desire to support wide variety of technical and business activities.
Responsibilities:
- Support the analysis and design of advanced laser based remote sensing systems.
- Perform prototype assembly & testing of lasers, photonics, and lidar systems.
- Work closely with other mechanical, electrical, and optical engineers in the development, assembly, disassembly, testing, characterization, and installation of optical, mechanical and electronic assemblies.
- Design and fabricate specialized or modified opto-mechanical, electro-optic, and electrical components.
- Utilize verbal and written communication skills to clearly communicate results to other team members and customers.
- Support process development and execute new processes to develop prototype products, document prototype process development.
- Setup and operation of laboratory equipment such as optical and electrical test equipment, microscopes, environmental chambers, chillers, etc.
- Assists in preparation of equipment for shipment, maintains documentation and inventory for remote sensing instrument systems and procedures using CAD and/or standard computer application software.
- Self-starter, willing learner, eager to gain and share new knowledge, able to work with minimal supervision, and be a team player.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS degree in Engineering or Physics or equivalent.
- Two years of relevant photonics/lasers/electro-optics experience.
- Skilled in the use of equipment such as laser power meters, oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, power supply systems, optics and laser systems, IR cameras, laser beam analyzing equipment, lenses, mirrors, prisms, collimators, shear plates, beam splitters, wave plates, etc.
- Patience and steady hands, good manual dexterity, as required for careful alignment of lasers, photonic components, and lidar systems.
- Knowledge of fundamental electronics circuits and schematics, and basic electronic components.
- Skilled in the use of computers and application software, (e.g., Microsoft Excel and Word).
- Skilled in the use of hand tools, small electrical tools, soldering, and basic machine tools.
- Skilled in assembly of electronic and mechanical assemblies.
- Operational knowledge of visible and invisible laser sources and associated safety knowledge.
- Ability and willingness to work with and be a member of a diverse team of people.
- Self-starter, willing learner, eager to gain and share new knowledge, able to work with minimal supervision, and be a team player.
Other Requirements:
US citizenship required. Security clearance a plus.
Desired:
- Some programming experience such as Python, Matlab, LabVIEW, or Arduino.
- Some experience designing with CAD such as SolidWorks.
- Some experience with Optical design software, such as Zemax, or similar.
