Research Associate in Instrument Development

The Astronomy Instrumentation Group at Cardiff University is seeking applications to fill the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate. 

The research associate will work with a team of researchers developing instrumentation for current and future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, including the Simons Observatory, CMB-S4, and the LiteBIRD satellite mission.

This research will cover significant aspects of the design, integration and testing of large ground-based CMB instruments, through to the design, development and qualification of critical optical components for future satellite missions.

There will be a particular focus on the development of additional receivers and optics tubes for the Simons Observatory.

The research associate will work within the active and diverse Astronomy Instrumentation Group (AIG) at Cardiff. The AIG has a rich heritage in the field of mm and submm instrumentation, making significant contributions to many high-profile ground, balloon and space-based experiments. 

The research associate will also work in collaboration with colleagues from our industrial partners, QMC Instruments Ltd and Sequestim Ltd, with a view to identifying commercial applications for the research.

Salary: £35,333 – £42,155 per annum (Grade 6)

To conduct research within the field of instrument development for astrophysics experiments and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities


  • To conduct research within the field of instrument development for astrophysics applications and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs, including bidding for funding, publishing in appropriate academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To attend and or present at conferences/seminars and project meetings at a local, national and international level as required
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects


  • To ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties
  • To ensure compliance with School and University Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity requirements
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate the role and which will enhance performance
