The successful applicant will be the primary research engineer for the dynamic and inclusive Steward UV Group which also includes a number of postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates. The applicant will work on Aspera, a NASA-funded SmallSat mission to detect and map warm-hot OVI emission from nearby galaxies for the first time. Aspera is expected to launch in 2025. The group is also actively working on the development of UV detector and grating technology as well as new small/large class UV space mission concepts. The successful applicant will also be encouraged to take an active role in cutting-edge space mission proposal writing and new concept development.
The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) is seeking candidates for one R&D Engineer/Scientist II to work on various spaceflight missions and instrumentation concepts. The selected candidate will work with Profs. Haeun Chung, Erika Hamden, and Carlos J. Vargas in their Steward UV Group.
- Assist the Aspera team in systems engineering tasks. This includes coordinating across Aspera technical groups to assist in solving problems and contributing to the overall design of the Aspera mission.
- Assist the Aspera team in mechanical design tasks
- Assist the UV Group in planning and implementing various lab testing setups for ultraviolet optics and detectors.
- Provide engineering support to the UV Group for the development of space mission and research project proposals.
