Mechanical / Robotics Engineer

Thorlabs, Inc. is looking for a talented and motivated Mechanical or Robotics Engineer to work on developing laser products. The position will work across multiple laser product design teams within the Thorlabs Laser Division and will collaborate closely with optical and electrical design engineers to release new laser products. Additionally, this position will assist with transfer to production and sustaining engineering throughout the life cycle of products. The successful candidate must have a proven record of industry and academic achievement, show strong analytical and communication skills, be comfortable doing hands-on work, and thrive in a collaborative environment.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

• Design and develop optical systems incorporating opto-mechanics, electronics, thermal management, and mechatronics for company’s advanced products and R&D efforts
• Producing mechanical drawings with appropriate GD&T and other manufacturing documents for prototype and production parts
• System-level and cross-disciplinary design on optical systems requiring micron positioning and microradian pointing tolerances over time and temperature
• Communicating with vendors and machine shops to solve machining problems, streamline our production processes, and reduce cost to build
• Maintaining documentation, specifically the mechanical portion of products BOMs within our ERP system and manufacturing work instructions
• Transitioning new designs to production, including building prototypes units or assisting other engineers or technicians with developing best assembly practices
• Basic optical calculations and simulations in conjunction with mechanical design to verify the design meets the specification (nice-to-have, not required)
