In this role, the Engineer owns camera and illumination sub-system test development, test method validation, and design verification across programs within the Endoscopy division. In addition, the Engineer serves as SME on vision system architecture, performance, and system-level integration and assumes responsibilities as required in the following areas on development teams: test method development, development testing, requirement testability and substantiation, and investigation related to failures, poorly understood risks, performance shifts, or product robustness.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Works within the development team to develop tests for vision sub-system design verification, including test design, electromechanical and optomechanical fixture development, bench model development, and script development.
  • Serves as an SME for standard optoelectronic and optomechanical methodologies in test case design and test execution
  • Act as a Vision Systems representative during system level hardware/software integration
  • Performs root cause investigations and designs / executes experiments as warranted to address DV failures and other performance observations, or in support of other product development needs.
  • Owns and maintains test case content
  • Performs test method validation / MSA and non-product software validations for design verification tests
  • Writes and executes design verification and engineering test protocols; analyzes data and authors test reports
  • Collaborates on design input clarity and testability
  • Applies statistical and problem solving (e.g. fishbone, 5-whys, DMAIC principles) analysis methods in any investigation / experimental work.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of patent applications
  • Evaluate new technologies related to endoscopic imaging and illumination systems
  • Other related duties as needed may be assigned.

Required:

  • M.S. in Optical, Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering plus 4 years experience, or a PhD plus 2 years experience, is required
  • Self-motivated with excellent written and verbal communication skills, required
  • Ability to own and drive tasks in a project team; ability to serve as process owner cross-functionally for testing/test development/verification is required
  • Demonstrated success with experimental design and investigative techniques is required
  • Prior experience with V&V testing and/or related Design Control processes (e.g. product development lifecycle, requirements and risk management) is required
  • Prior experience developing and implementing new test methods is required
  • Expertise in metrology for optical elements and optical systems, including spatial frequency response, color uniformity, chroma level, lateral chromatic displacement, local geometric distortion, texture blur, or visual noise is required
  • Proficiency in quantitative analysis and hardware automation in MATLAB or Python required; Python OpenCV experience preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, international and domestic, is required

Preferred:

  • Experience in the medical device industry in an engineering function related to imaging and/or illumination sub-systems is preferred; experience in medical endoscopy or laparoscopy strongly preferred
  • Experience in objective and subjective image and video quality assessment preferred
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for fixture design and a solid understanding of GD&T principles preferred
  • Linux commands experience is preferred
  • Proficiency in statistical principles/tools and statistics software such as Minitab, MATLAB or Python is preferred
