The LSO group is currently looking for a talented engineer (level based on experience and education) to join its seasoned RD&E team. This is an optical and laser engineering role and person in this role will need to have both wide ranging technical skills as well as some in depth knowledge in the area of illumination modeling.  Design work includes architecture layout of laser diode-based illuminators, Zemax modelling, tolerance analysis, analysis of illuminators/laser engines, and specification of key optical components.  The role will require lab experience so to participate in the build and test of prototype illuminators.   Data analysis skills that facilitate manufacturing reliability predictions based on prototype performance is a plus. 

Engineer interfaces directly with external customers and works on cross-functional team problem solving efforts. Works on projects with long term technical and financial importance to management.  Develops and maintains relationships across departments to better execute projects.  Works with some direction from supervisor and has ability to be an independent technical contributor. 


  • Skilled in illumination modelling using Zemax (Sequential and Non-Sequential)
  • Ability to model and optimize 3D optical systems
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in laser physics and gaussian beam propagation
  • Good understanding of integrated optical systems involving the integration of light sources, imaging optics, precision mechanics, image processing, and other key sub-systems and technologies
  • Ability to generate optical components specifications and drawings based on higher level specifications and models.
  • Provide accurate and detailed requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical components. 
  • Ability to generate lens requirements, coating requirements, and optical system requirements from customer interactions and documents.
  • Interface with opto-mechanical and CAD designers to define tooling, optical mounting, and human interface requirements based on predicted worst-case optical tolerances
  • Design feasibility experiments for opto-mechanical sub-systems, at times using simulation tools in support of R&D prototypes and production processes
  • Ability to interface with customers to determine their needs, to present options in a manner consistent with IDEX business principles, often offering out-of-the-box solutions beneficial to both parties
  • Attention to detail.  Demonstrate persistence in identifying the cause of unusual results – good problem solver           
  • Ability to work independently toward project goals with general guidance
  • Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions    
  • Complies with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Complies with the Clean Room Protocol when in a clean room environment


  • A Bachelor of Science degree in an Optics related Engineering discipline and 4 years relevant experience OR a Master’s degree in a directly related field with 2 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Understanding of precision alignment & metrology techniques.
  • Writing technical reports in both detailed written format and concise pictorial oral presentation format.
  • Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment – familiar with photometric/radiometric measurement
  • Direct experience in the specification and testing of optical based integrated systems.  
  • Experience with one or more optical design software packages such as Zemax


  • Reliability analysis of optical components.  
  • Understanding of degradation mechanisms and acceleration factors.
  • Designing, setting up, and conducting optical system lifetime tests.
  • Analyzing test data and conducting statistical analysis
  • Ability to layout mechanical arrangements for optical testing, possibly in CAD.
  • Experience in the specification or design of motion control systems, such as fast-focus modules.
  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.
  • Execution of assigned tasks in a time and cost-efficient manner.
