About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A) to join a new research initiative between the University of Sydney, UTS in the area of nonlinear optics with applications in optical limiting. The successful candidate will conduct research using analytic and numerical techniques to investigate nonlinear wave propagation in guided-wave geometries with the aim to optimise the optical limiting functionality. The research will be carried out with researchers at the two institutions (University of Sydney: Prof. Martijn de Sterke and A/Prof. Stefano Palomba; UTS: Dr Irina Kabakova).

This research is to be conducted with the support of the Defence Science and Technology Group of the Department of Defence. In accordance with Defence policy, the Research Collaborator will be required to achieve and maintain DISP Entry Level to participate in the proposed research program – i.e. suitable for access to security information that is assessed as being “Official:Sensitive.”

The role requires regular reporting in writing and in person, to the Defence Science and Technology Group. All publications resulting from this agreement will be subject to DST release approval.

About you

  • a PhD in Theoretical Physics, Optical Physics or Applied Mathematics (candidates who are near completion may also be considered)
  • proven research ability, and evidence of self-motivation and research potential
  • excellent written and oral communications skills and is able to interact with a variety of researchers and stakeholders
  • a demonstrated excellence in research within physics or applied mathematics through published research in refereed journals
  • knowledge of the theoretical methods of nonlinear guided wave optics and photonic lattices
  • experience with Matlab and Python, and preferably Lumerical.
  • understanding of the limitations on device performance imposed by common fabrication and experimental techniques.
  • experience with the visualisation of results of computer simulations.

To ensure the successful delivery of the research program, we will need a candidate to start no later than 1 April 2022.
