Technical Leader Silicon Photonics Process and Reliability Engineer

About Cisco

Cisco enables people to make powerful connections–whether in business, education, philanthropy, or creativity. Cisco hardware, software, and service offerings are used to create the Internet solutions that make networks possible–providing easy access to information anywhere, at any time. Cisco was founded in 1984 by a small group of computer scientists from Stanford University. Since the company’s inception, Cisco engineers have been leaders in the development of Internet Protocol (IP)-based networking technologies. Today, with more than 71,000 employees worldwide, this tradition of innovation continues with industry-leading products and solutions in the company’s core development areas of routing and switching, as well as in advanced technologies such as home networking, IP telephony, optical networking, security, storage area networking, and wireless technology. In addition to its products, Cisco provides a broad range of service offerings, including technical support and advanced services. Cisco sells its products and services, both directly through its own sales force as well as through its channel partners, to large enterprises, commercial businesses, service providers, and consumers.

Why Cisco

We Are Cisco

#WeAreCisco, where each person is unique, but we bring our talents to work as a team and make a difference. Here’s how we do it.

We embrace digital, and help our customers implement change in their digital businesses. Some may think we’re “old” (30 years strong!) and only about hardware, but we’re also a software company. And a security company. An AI/Machine Learning company. We even invented an intuitive network that adapts, predicts, learns and protects. No other company can do what we do – you can’t put us in a box!

But “Digital Transformation” is an empty buzz phrase without a culture that allows for innovation, creativity, and yes, even failure (if you learn from it.)

Day to day, we focus on the give and take. We give our best, we give our egos a break and we give of ourselves (because giving back is built into our DNA.) We take accountability, we take bold steps, and we take difference to heart. Because without diversity of thought and a dedication to equality for all, there is no moving forward.

So, you have colorful hair? Don’t care. Tattoos? Show off your ink. Like polka dots? That’s cool.

What You’ll Do

As an experienced Silicon Photonics Process and Reliability Engineer, you’ll be working to develop and qualify the next generation of Silicon Photonics technologies and products. Using your knowledge and experience in Silicon Optics design and CMOS/Semiconductor manufacturing processes you will evaluate new product designs for potential failure modes, develop qualification, reliability, and wafer acceptance plans. You will work closely with foundries, design, and process development teams to ensure product reliability, high wafer yields and product design specifications and performance are met. You will also document the required qualification and reliability plans. You will work with foundry suppliers and implement and document acceptable in-line metrics and wafer acceptance tests. Using CMOS/semiconductor reliability methodologies, you will design DOEs and stress tests to evaluate the reliability performance of the next generation Silicon Photonics designs.

As the development progresses, you will be evaluating and quantifying the design reliability attributes for failures and reliability prediction. You will suggest mitigation plans for these failure modes and work with and lead cross-functional teams to resolve potential reliability, yield, and design issues. As part of this effort, you will also use your knowledge of material science analysis and data interpretation for SEM, EDX, CSAM, Cross-sectioning, X-rays and other techniques to evaluate and improve designs.

Who You’ll Work With

You will be part of a global Technology & Quality organization with diverse subject matter expertise and will add to that knowledge base with your exceptional understanding of Silicon Photonics Process and Reliability principles.
In your role, you will work with the Foundry, Design and Process Engineering teams to evaluate, develop and implement new technologies and design ideas. You will also work with state-of-the-art technology partners from the Optical & Semiconductor industries to drive product innovation and design for reliability. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop the next generation of industry leading optical transceiver products based on silicon photonics and to participate in industry standards task group to promote and standardize qualification and reliability methodologies across silicon photonics.

Who You Are

You are highly proficient in silicon photonics wafer fabrication processes and able to influence and act as the subject matter expert for photonics wafer fabrication process development, trouble shoot technical and processing issues and execute DOEs and build plans to prove out new technology platforms. You will help drive Cisco’s research and development activities with silicon photonics/CMOS foundry suppliers toward the development of next generation photonics building blocks. You will drive process and device qualification activities at the supplier foundry and will collaborate with operations, supply chain and engineering teams for product qualification and reliability data collection. You will define on-going reliability criteria (ORM) and specs to be executed by Foundry. Work with foundry partners to bring up in-line and end of line wafer level optical and electrical testing programs. Transfer Silicon Photonics foundry processes from R&D to high volume manufacturing and set process/design specifications to align component performance to Cisco’s Photonics module performance and quality requirements. You have experience with Silicon Photonics design, components (such as waveguides, coupling structures, modulators, detectors, TSV’s, MEMs), OSAT (Cu pillars, flip chip bonding, etc), performance metrics, wafer fabrication back/front end of line qualification and reliability metrics, process and yield statistical data analysis, including Cpk calculations, other yield metrics and measurement capability analysis and an established record of product engineering leadership resulting in process, quality and yield improvements.
You have demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams with good communication, influencing and program management skills.
You thrive in challenging situations and are able to analyze a complex problem, assessing the risk and develop mitigation plans to resolve it.
In addition to your technical skills, you also have the ability to effectively rationalize decisions that impact revenue, customers, suppliers, and other Cisco teams
