HBOI Associate Research Professor
Summary:
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University in Ft. Pierce, FL is inviting applications at all professorial levels in ocean engineering and technology. The successful applicant will develop and manage a research program concentrating on prototype development, testing, and scientific application in the field of marine optics. Competitive candidates may have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Developing optical sensing approaches for biogeochemical, optical, and physical oceanic properties, including nonlinear optics for environmental sensing;
- Developing active and passive remote imaging systems in the marine environment, including thermal imaging, hyperspectral imaging systems to support satellite and aerial remote sensing;
- Developing underwater LiDAR or other laser-based imaging approaches as well as underwater optical communications; and
- Other applications related to marine optics.
Responsibilities will include developing, enhancing and maintaining test equipment and facilities as necessary. Interest in these areas follows from the FAU strategic plan “Race to Excellence” and a new associated initiative on persistent surveillance in the marine environment.
Successful candidates at the Assistant Professor level are expected to establish a strong independent research program while successful candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level are expected to have a strong on-going record of scholarly research activity. All candidates are expected to demonstrate commitment to collaboration with the research groups within HBOI. Although the position has a core focus on research, formal teaching opportunities are also available. This position includes a start-up package and lab and office space.
FAU HBOI is one of the nation’s premier oceanographic centers, integrating all research at FAU that focuses on the research and management of ocean, estuaries and freshwater bodies. It is home to a research community of approximately 200 ocean scientists, staff and students that drive innovation in marine science and engineering, ocean optics, ocean dynamics and modeling, conservation of coral reefs, marine drug discovery, and studies of marine mammals and fisheries. Minimum Qualification:
PhD from an accredited institution in Ocean Engineering, Physical Optics, or closely related field from an accredited institution required at time of application.
Knowledge and experience in optical modeling and optical laboratory setup are essential.
Experience in developing and managing a successful research program is necessary for consideration at the Associate and Full Professor levels, nominally over time periods of 5 and 10 years of experience, respectively.
Strong public presentation and communication skills are required.
Must be motivated to work on highly interdisciplinary project teams.
Experience in optical payload development for autonomous deployments is preferred.
