The Department of Physics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in experimental physics with appointment to begin August 2022. The position is open to any qualified experimentalist, although preference may be given to candidates in the fields of condensed matter/materials science or AMO/Photonics. The successful candidate will receive a startup package consistent with an undergraduate institution, including startup funds, research student support, and a laboratory space.
The primary responsibilities of this position will include establishing a productive on-campus laboratory research program that involves undergraduate students, while teaching a variety of courses from a standard physics curriculum. The successful candidate will also contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities. Required Qualifications and Minimum Expectations
To be considered minimally qualified for this position, candidates must hold a PhD in Physics, or a related discipline. In addition, applicant’s materials must satisfy each of the following in the department’s core areas:
- Teaching: Demonstrate enthusiasm and potential for successful teaching in a variety of physics courses in a standard physics curriculum, including lower and upper division as well as graduate courses.
- Research: Exhibit ability to establish a self-supporting, active, on-campus laboratory research program that will produce peer-reviewed publications and will heavily involve undergraduate students.
- Service: Articulate a commitment to mentor undergraduates from a large, diverse student body and support the work of the department, college, and university via committee appointments.
Preferred or Desired Qualifications
In addition to meeting all the above minimum expectations, the successful candidate will demonstrate plans and/or potential for excellence in at least one of the department’s three areas of academic activity: teaching, research, and service. Excellent performance in any area is equally valued by the department. Evidence of ability to tie activities in one academic area to another (e.g., tie research activities to teaching) is especially valued by the department.
Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching may include (but is not limited to)
- Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
- Familiarity with current, research-based physics pedagogies
- Experience implementing innovative teaching practices
Evidence of potential for excellence in research may include (but is not limited to)
- Postdoctoral experience, or other professional research experience, in a physics-related discipline with evidence of positive outcomes
- Experience working with undergraduate students in a research environment
- Strong record of research accomplishments resulting in peer-reviewed research outputs
- Receipt of sponsored fellowships or other external funds
Evidence of potential for excellence in service may include (but is not limited to)
- Professional contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Record of academic mentorship or other peer mentoring
- Professional outreach activities
- Activity in professional societies

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
