Postdoctoral Appointee-Quantum Metrology & Nano-Opto-Mechanical Systems (NOMS)
Sandia National Laboratories
: We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to conduct research and development in two areas: 99. Developing prototype nano\-opto\-mechanical mechanisms capable of providing displacement sensing information\. This assignment will allow the successful bidder to engage with researchers developing fiber\-optic based sensing techniques and the opportunity to work with metrology, test engineering, and component development staff seeking to apply research hardware to specific applications\.99. Qualifying a new primary barometric pressure standard\. This assignment will allow the Primary Standards Lab to perform ultraprecise determinations of gas pressure through displacement measurements \(at the picometer scale\) via an optical interferometer\. The technique has the potential to replace various commercial gauges and Mercury Manometers used as primary standards\. The project involves collaborating with NIST designers, installing vacuum manifolds and associated hardware, developing software controls, understanding measurement uncertainty, and developing a measurement process using the device\. On any given day, you may be asked to: + Apply existing knowledge and gain new knowledge toward photonic/quantum\-based metrology and nano\-optomechanical devices\.+ Conduct research and publish results\.+ Work in a team environment and contribute their knowledge to the team\.+ Interact with other scientists and engineers to solve technical problems\.+ Propose new research and pursue funding opportunities\. Required: 99. Ph\.D\. in physics, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering \(PhD must have been conferred within 5 years of the start date, or be conferred prior to the start date\)\.99. Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\. Desired: Your resume or cover letter should include a brief statement about \(1\) how your technical experience is relevant to NOMS and \(2\) what you intend to gain from the postdoc experience\. Any of the following types of experience are desired: + Chip\-scale photonics+ Physical optics+ Multiphysics finite element analysis tools+ Fundamentals of light/gas quantum interactions+ Sensors for measurement of displacement \(accelerometers\) and/or vacuum and pressure The following additional criteria are also desired: + Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team+ Adaptability to changing tasks and projects as needed+ Problem\-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as evidenced by a publication/presentation record+ Eagerness to work in a multi\-disciplinary team environment+ The addition of diversity to the department through background, experience, interests, etc\. Department Description: The Primary Physical Standards I Department is part of the Sandia Primary Standards Lab \(PSL\) and provides calibration support to the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex, including support for Sandia research and production organizations\. The department maintains expertise in thermal; radiation and optical; Flow, Acceleration, Shock, and Humidity; Pressure; Vacuum; and Leak measurements and calibrations\. The department develops and maintains primary standards, consults on measurement problems, calibrates reference standards and measurement and test equipment, and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise contractor standards laboratories\. In addition, the organization supports a variety of external Work for Other \(WFO\) customers by providing measurement expertise and calibration of high\-precision standards\. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program \(NVLAP\)\. About Sandia: Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting\-edge work in a broad array of areas\. Some of the main reasons we love our jobs: + Challenging work withamazingimpact that contributes to security, peace, and freedom worldwide+ Extraordinary co\-workers+ Some of the best tools, equipment, and research facilities in the world+ Career advancement and enrichment opportunities+ Flexible schedules, generous vacations, strongmedical and other benefits, competitive 401k, learning opportunities, relocation assistance and amenities aimed at creating a solid work/life balance\* _World\-changing technologies\. Life\-changing careers\._ Learn more about Sandia at: http://www\.sandia\.gov \*These benefits vary by job classification\. Security Clearance: Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\. EEO Statement: Equal opportunity employer/Disability/Vet/GLBT : This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\. |
