POSITION:  Product Engineer – Fiber Optic

Location:  NC

Purpose of Position: Provide engineering support for the distribution, manufacturing, molding and maintenance of products to meet customer demand. Tasks include coordination of new molds with contract manufacturers and machine shops, sourcing of new component suppliers, development of new processes to improve CM/supplier performance, support of quality systems and product cost analysis. Position also provides engineering support to customers and all internal functions to solve product problems, control change and promote the overall success of parts and services.

Major Responsibilities:

 

 • Maintain and support all company product lines • Understand mold/ molding machine design and operation

. • Design and develop new molds, molding processes, fixtures and process techniques

 • Have a working knowledge of materials used in the product set

• Provide engineering support to customers, suppliers and contract manufacturers to include site visits. Create drawings and models to drive all operations. Review/create quality systems, support/design production systems, troubleshoot and solve problems

• Use all CMMs, microscopes, vision and other measurement tools to analyze and correct problems. This includes molds and fixtures used in manufacturing

 • Lead or support product improvement efforts and projects

 • Use measurement equipment to create and maintain first articles

 • Analyze product cost and implement cost reduction plans that meet company goals

 • Source suppliers/contract manufacturers to support new and existing products

• Provide technical support for manufacturing associates. Support may include product analysis, testing/debugging, troubleshooting and problem solving

. • Understand optical fibers, fiber-optic connectors, and miscellaneous fiber-optic hardware

• Act as a focal point for all technical issues on fiber, cable, connectors, hardware and system performance for company Product Management

 • Coordinate optical assembly production as required

 • Provide process and/or equipment training to process technicians and hourly associates as required

. •Support and maintain systems to achieve ISO 9001 registration

 • Perform supplier quality audits at company suppliers

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

 

 • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering field, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering preferred

 • Thorough understanding of product costing • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a medium volume manufacturing environment (injection molding, die casting, machining, assembly, etc.)

 • Knowledge of statistical techniques (design of experiments, measurement R&R, and statistical process control)

• Working knowledge of machining, tools, fixturing, and assembly practices

 • Knowledge and working experience with mechanical (indicators, micrometers, etc.) and electronic metrology instrumentation (CMM, Interferometer, Confocal microscope, etc.) is preferred.

 • Working knowledge of fiber optic assemblies, connectors, and testing preferred

• Advanced PC skills with standard MS Office software: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

• Demonstrated planning, organizational follow-up and presentation skills • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well, as verbal and written communications skills
