Senior Electro-optic/ Photonic Device Engineer | Lightwave Logic, Inc

Lightwave Logic (LWLG) is a public material and device development company that is commercializing its leading Organic Nonlinear Polymers for a variety of electro-optic devices, with primary applications in high-speed fiber-optic telecom and data communications. Our development roadmap is geared to disrupt the industry by introducing organic modulators that have superior speed, lower power consumption, and smaller size than present inorganic devices. Our materials and devices are extendable into other applications, including sensors and optical computing. We are seeking a Senior Electro-optic/Photonic Device Engineer to work in our facility in Longmont, CO. Lightwave offers competitive compensation and benefits along with a fast-paced working environment. Lightwave Logic is seeking a senior electro-optic/photonics device engineer to enhance the company’s activities in commercializing fiber-optic-coupled multi-GHz optical guided–wave modulators and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on innovative electro-optic polymers. This position requires hands-on efforts in the design, fabrication and optical/rf testing of advanced devices based on LWL’s high-performance polymer materials. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development, qualification and moderate-volume prototyping of these modulators and PICs in this rapidly growing company. These products will significantly advance the state of the modulator commercial art in low-power and low-loss operation up to at least 50 GHz, and will be key components in next-generation fiber optic telecom and datacom systems operating at 100 Gbps and beyond. The devices will be fabricated on silicon substrates and in some cases, will be incorporated into nanoscale silicon photonic chips. The developed technology will be extendable to multi-modulator PICs. Specific duties will include: Evaluating electro-optic properties of advanced polymers. This task includes overseeing the design and implementation of optical/electrical/mechanical test equipment. Playing a lead role in the modeling and design of the optical and rf performance of polymer devices and PICs, including design of photomasks. Developing wafer fabrication processes that include multi-layer polymer deposition, multi-layer metallization, and micron and sub-micron level patterning, utilizing a state-of-the art clean room. This task includes operating and helping to modify and maintain micro-fabrication equipment as required. Documenting developed processes and implementing statistical methods that monitor process yields. Evaluating loss, modal properties and other passive characteristics of electro-optical polymer waveguide devices. This task includes designing and implementing advanced micro-optic-based optical test systems, data collection and analysis. Evaluating electro-optic properties of modulators, from low frequencies to multi-GHz (50-100 GHz). Task includes designing and implementing advanced electro-optic test systems for both packaged and unpackaged modulator chips, data collection and analysis. Test systems can include fiber interferometers. Evaluating a multiplicity of modulators and passive polymer photonics device, including the use of statistical methods to assess device environmental integrity and manufacturability. Operating and overseeing as required, the modification and maintenance of electro-optic test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, lasers and photodiodes, micro-positioning mounts and data collection interfaces. Supervising and directing electro-optic technicians. Working effectively as part of an inter-disciplinary engineering team that includes device designers, materials device engineers, micro-fabrication engineers, package and test engineers and technicians.
