Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. This is a multidisciplinary position you will be expected to provide complex technical support in energy sciences, involving construction, development and operation of soft and tender X-ray beamline and end-stations, design, development, installation and commissioning of photon-in/photon-out and photon-in/electron-out X-ray spectroscopy equipment including RIXS and APXPS, user support, and development of in situ and operando experimental systems. With limited direction, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of technical solutions to a wide variety of complex or difficult problems, independently capable of facilitating and executing beamline maintenance and upgrades, and capable of developing research based on technical capabilities for users and research collaborators. Documentation of design and results of experimental work is required; adherence to environment, safety, and health policies and procedures.
What You Will Do:
• Manage and implement R&D projects from beginning to end with limited supervision, including planning, scheduling and coordination of technical support, to solve a wide range of complex or difficult technical problems and improve the operation of the beamline or experiment.
• Independently provide multifunctional technical support applying a broad range of principles, technical and/or engineering/scientific concepts and practices in the area of beamline or experiment operation, development, and coordination.
• Manage tuning and operating beamlines and experiments for the success of user programs and provide resolutions when needed.
• Partner and independently work with the project lead scientists, mechanical/electrical engineers/technicians, for maintaining, developing, and upgrading beamlines and experiments.
• Train new visiting scholars and graduate students in operation of beamline and associated end-stations.
• Adhere to environment, safety, and health policies and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
• Provides software support for the control, data acquisition and analysis codes required to operate the experimental system.
• Disseminate experimental and research results via publications in refereed journals; present results via oral presentations at various meetings, conferences and peer reviews.
What is Required:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Engineering or related field and a minimum of 3 years work experience.
• Experience with interdisciplinary projects, including collaboration with both scientific and engineering staff.
• Experience with optics and electronics.
• Experience with synchrotron radiation techniques applied to the study of chemical and electronic properties of materials.
• Knowledge of energy sciences, condensed matter physics and chemistry as well as a thorough understanding of modern instrumentation techniques applied to these areas.
• Must be able to work independently, innovative and able to design, guide and support users’ experiments from initiation to meaningful conclusion in collaboration with a team of engineers, physicists, technical support staff, postdocs, and students.
• Knowledge of the characteristics and properties of synchrotron radiation sources. Effective oral and written communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
• PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Engineering or related field.
