About the Position

Kaiam is looking for a Mechanical Engineer with strong skills in SolidWorks and a proven record of product development in the fiber optics industry. In this role, you will use your knowledge to design fiber optical products for manufacturing and help develop packaging, assembly and test processes of cutting edge optical transceivers.

The qualified individuals should be familiar with the design of pluggable optical transceivers for datacom applications, and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical needs for the housing, optical packages and optical interfaces.

A deep understanding of engineering and manufacturing of fiber optic components is essential. Experience with component qualification is also important, including Telcordia guidelines and MIL-Spec procedures.

Knowledge of high/mid volume manufacturing design is desired.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors with 4 years of experience or Master’s Degree and 2 years of experience with tool and piece parts design in an engineering or NPI role
  • Proven ability to use SolidWorks and other engineering software tools
  • Familiarity with fiber optic processes and packaging equipment
  • Experience with mechanical testing of optical packages and transceivers
  • Understanding of essential principles in semiconductor packaging
  • Knowledge of die casting, injection molding and sheet metal stamping
  • Strong teamwork, verbal and written communication skills, design review and documentation practices
  • Knowledge of Structural FEA and thermal modeling. Hands-on experience a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop precision opto-mechanical parts and packaging for optical packages and transceivers.
  • Responsible for all mechanical designs, drawings, and revision control from prototyping to final product
  • Maintain documentation including mechanical BOM and part number information control.
  • Participate in product development teams as the primary mechanical design resource
  • Qualify and act as an engineering liaison to key outside vendors
  • Act as a point of contact with Production on the transfer of new mechanical designs to manufacturing.

Additional Requirements:

  • Familiarity with DFM, six-sigma and process control methodologies
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Must be able to perform in a distributed, diverse cross-functional team environment
  • Must have good engineering judgment and work independently making sound mechanical engineering decisions
  • Knowledge of Design and development products while keeping cost, reliability and quality in mind
