Postdoctoral Appointee – Nanophotonic & Microphotonic Technologies

: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in the Applied Photonic Microsystems Department with an emphasis in nanophotonic and microphotonic technologies\. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: + Support research involving silicon photonics, nanophotonics, nano\-opto\-mechanics, quantum optics, and/or nonlinear optics+ Support research in areas including optical interconnect, optical emitters and detectors, optical\-forces in nano\-optomechanical waveguide and cavity system, integrated quantum optical systems, metamaterials, plasmonic and phononic devices, and other optical technologies+ Design, simulate, fabricate, and/or characterize novel optical devices, materials, and systems+ Study new physics phenomenon and evaluate new concepts+ Report research results in top\-tier journals and conferences+ Generate new intellectual property through patent filing Required: + PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Science, Physics, or other related technical area conferred within five years prior to employment+ Experience in the design and test of optical systems, optical materials or devices, or photonics microsystems+ Experience in developing or using software for device performance simulations using, for example, Comsol, Matlab/Simulink, FDTD codes etc\.+ Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publications in top\-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance Desired: + Minimum GPA of 3\.2/4\.0 in undergraduate programs and 3\.5/4\.0 in graduate programs+ Expertise in nonlinear optics, integrated photonics, optomechanics, quantum or ultrafast optics, semiconductor physics, materials, and/or related topics+ Experience with nonlinear optical measurement techniques and basic theories for treatment of nonlinear phenomena+ Experience in IR and terahertz optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors and spectroscopies+ Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and materials \(for example: optical waveguides, modulators, plasmonics, fibers or photonic/phononic bandgap materials\) with commercial and custom codes+ Familiarity with laboratory optical bench optics, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers, able to design and carry out laser\-based optical experiments+ Experience in high speed characterization of devices, electrical probe stations, operation of high speed and high frequency test equipment, such as bit error rate test equipment, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and high speed oscilloscopes+ Self\-motivated, with strong communication skills to work independently and in a team environment+ Experience with micro and nano fabrication processes, tools, and metrology+ Familiarity with the following: – Nonlinear processes such as four\-wave mixing, two\-photon absorption and stimulated Brillouin scattering- Physics of waveguides, photonic crystals or phononic crystals, plasmonic devices, and metamaterials- Solid state physics and phenomena and physical optics- Quantum information science and technologies Department Description: The Applied Photonic Microsystems Department develops and matures state of the art photonic technologies for a variety of national security purposes\.
