Key responsibilities:
Design and simulation of optical components (e.g. lenses, diffusers, diffractive/holographic optical elements, lensed fiber, etc) and opto-mechanical systems for beam-conditioning of free-space and fiber-coupled semiconductor lasers
Cost-effective tolerancing of low-cost, manufacturable optical components for high-volume consumer applications
Design, verification testing (DVT) and optical characterization (LIV, WL, far field, beam quality) of high-power semiconductor lasers (edge emitter and VCSEL devices)
Work with electrical/mechanical engineering and assembly/packaging staff on design, development and packaging of photonic optical systems
Review manufacturing processes/methods with suppliers to optimize for cost and robust performance
Document and present design, modeling and/or characterization results
Qualifications:
5+ years hands-on experience or equivalent skill level in optical component/system design for photonic and/or fiber-coupled systems
Proficiency with at least one of the following optical design packages: Zemax, Code V, LightTool, FRED or ASAP
Strong foundation in physics (e.g. lasers), optical sciences (e.g. coherence, speckle, diffraction, imaging) and/or electrical engineering (e.g. electricity & magnetism,
Hands-on experience with lasers, LEDs, lenses, multilayer coatings, diffusers, diffractive optical elements, illumination and imaging optics
Understanding of manufacturing methods for low-cost, manufacturable optical components for high-volume consumer applications
Strong analytic and data analysis/mining skills via Excel, Minitab and/or JMP
Familiarity in LabVIEW and / or Python is desirable
Communicates/contributes effectively in cross-functional teams
MS degree or above preferred in optical, electrical, semiconductor or physical engineering
US citizenship or permanent residency allows greater program flexibility
