Responsibilities
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides professional engineering/scientific support to the laser beacon team within the Photonics Technology Department. Develops critical hardware and software needed for calibration of on-orbit assets. Supports research activities in the lab as well as extended field deployments. Has or can develop working knowledge of a broad range of disciplines, including optics, lasers, mechanical and electrical design, controls software and data collection.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Independently evaluates, selects, and applies engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Works with Project Leader and management to provide support to inter-organizational and outside customer contacts.
Engineering assignments: Performs analytical studies, conducts tests, develops details of specifications, prepares details of analytical report findings, assists in planning and development of studies and design projects.
Systems engineering assignments: Participates in development of program interfaces between hardware and computer systems; diagnoses both hardware and software simulation tool problems; designs improvements to simulation environments; develops and/or revises programs for data reduction and analysis.
Project engineering assignments: Performs analytical studies, conducts integration tests, and develops details of acquisition hardware/software and database specifications.
Technology assignments: Assists in technology planning and development; performs testing and evaluation of materials and devices; develops procurement specifications and test procedures; prepares details of analytical reports, including preliminary findings and recom mendations.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate technical discipline from a recognized institution
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
2 or more years of increasingly responsible and related engineering/scientific experience
Master’s or Ph.D. in appropriate discipline.
Familiarity with lasers or optical systems. Programming experience in C++, LabView, or related languages.
Basic skills in mechanical engineering (CAD/SolidWorks) or electrical engineering.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS
Must be willing and able to support extended field campaigns (domestic and international).
Field campaigns include working long/unusual hours and the physical movement/set up of field hardware .
