(USA-CA-Menlo Park) Optical Systems Engineer

Intro:
Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share, and make the world more open and connected. Through our growing family of apps and services, we’re building a different kind of company that helps billions of people around the world connect and share what matters most to them. Whether we’re creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to make the world more open and accessible. Connecting the world takes every one of us—and we’re just getting started.

Summary:
Driven by our rapid growth, Facebook is looking to take advantage of the efficiencies gained by optimizing our network hardware for our data centers. Facebook is looking for an Optical Systems Engineer to support the development of the Network Hardware for our Data Centers and Wide Area Networks of Facebook. This position is full-time and located in our Menlo Park office.

Required Skills:

  1. Define and engineer the next generation optical transport technology with particular focus on optical transport system design and modeling for Data Center applications.

  2. Work in a collaborative environment across Facebook and with ODM’s & OEM’s to drive Facebook’s requirements for development, planning, operation and deployment.

  3. Design, develop, build and test components, systems and products. Recommend new product and product development, and contribute to the roadmap efforts. Candidate will be expected to interface with industry leaders and contribute to RFI/RFP process for optical solutions.

  4. Diagnosis capturing coherent or direct-detect waveforms on high-speed oscilloscopes and performing coherent signal processing on waveforms, calculating/measuring bit-error rate performance in the presence of optical noise and other impairments. Particular interest will be to faster baud rates.

  5. Characterization of RF/mm-wave systems, such as S-parameter measurements, jitter measurements, and ADC/DAC performance and ENOB.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Sciences and Engineering, and or related field

  2. 5+ years of experience in optical communications, photonics, high-speed electronics or systems

  3. Experience in high-speed optical and electrical test, and measurement equipment control and data acquisition and automation.

  4. Experience in photonic integrated components, electronic (integrated) circuits, and signal analysis and processing with high-speed optical and electrical test as well as measurement equipment control and data acquisition and automation.

    1. Experience with system-level optical communication hardware and components. Candidate should have worked with PCBA designers, SW and FW engineers, and understand trade-offs.

    2. Communication skills. Candidate will be expected to communicate complex optical hardware requirements to non-experts both internally and industry-facing.

    3. Experience in statistics and how statistics apply to optical systems for purposes of link budgeting, measurement error, and hardware variability.

    4. Experience in Python or other object oriented language, C, or Matlab.

    5. Experience working in distributed software development environment with other engineers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in DWDM transmission systems.

  2. Experience with open source tooling (GIT, Mercurial, mySQL, Linux).

  3. Experience in characterizing high-speed RF and mm-wave interconnects, amplifiers, and components.

  4. Experience with optical link budgeting concepts and fiber-optic link impairments.

  5. Experience in creating or influencing system requirements documents.

  6. Experience with advanced modulation formats (e.g., OOK, PAM-4, QPSK, 8-QAM, 16QAM) and concepts. Candidate should be conversant on these topics and understand impairments.
